Mosaico is the final project of two students from the Journalism program at Sheridan College. The documentary came from the idea of celebrating people; focusing on our differences and how they make us not so different after all. We interviewed several young people living in Canada and asked them about their thoughts on money, opportunities and education. They in turn shared their dreams, lifestyles, journeys with mental health, as well as their hopes.
When putting their stories together, we saw a beautiful mosaic created: nine different people who, amidst their search for purpose, are constantly striving to be better versions of themselves. Each member was an essential part of this project, and it exists solely because of them.

Mosaico is our story of...

Chinelo, 26 (he/him)

Born and raised in St. Vincent, now living in Toronto, Chinelo has seen and experienced a lot. He is simply passionate about life and the things that happen around him. Like many others in this documentary, Chinelo is often pushed by his deep love for creating, inspiring, making music, and working with his hands. He tries his best to elevate himself and those around him.

David, 22 (he/him)

Married at 22, David knows he’s not like most young people living in Canada. As an artist and musician, he has an innate drive to create. David is a go-getter and believes in pursuing whatever he truly desires. The market might be saturated with an onslaught of aspiring stars and streaming services, but this only means there is ample opportunity for him. He sees himself as an ever-changing individual, one who is constantly finding and redefining himself in a messy world.

Dera, 20 (she/her)

Dera is 20 years old and recently married. As a young person in this day and age, she knows it’s unorthodox. She does not necessarily see herself as an anomaly, but as someone who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to start going after it. She wants to be a walking testimony and a positive example to her friends and family. She believes that in good faith, she can live the life she's fighting hard for she’s seen it happen time and time again.

Fiona, 20 (she/her)

Fiona is a free spirit because she no longer holds high expectations. She grew up with very little as a child, and now, she can’t help but refuse to aim higher than she could ever dream of. Like most people, she has concerns about how she will end up. She worries if she will ever find satisfaction or perhaps happiness, even though this, to her, also seems like something out of reach. She worries if she’ll ever be able to afford a house of her own, settle down, or escape the confines of social media and technology that seem to consume us.

Isabel, 24 (she/her)

Isabel is well-spoken and assertive. It doesn’t take most people long to decipher this. She grew up in Barbados, an entirely different world from her current home, Toronto. Isabel knows that she has to be tough, bold, and bright in order to succeed. She is relentless in her endeavours and as a creative, this only makes her more determined in her pursuit to be the one calling the shots.

Kiran, 20 (she/her)

Kiran is a first-generation immigrant, born and raised in a suburb in Southern Ontario. Her firsthand experiences with racism and bigotry, whether implicit or explicit, have shown and taught her a lot about what she expects of a better future. Kiran touches on perfectionism, identity, guilt, and more topics that may seem all too real for most of us.

Liam, 23 (he/him)

Liam will always be passionate about action sports, like BMX and skateboarding. From a suburb in Southern Ontario, Liam is one of the few who wants to venture outside of small bubbles. He recently came from an impromptu stay in Banff and now is venturing into other parts of Canada, such as Montreal. His down-to-earth personality and free-spiritedness allow him to make decisions on a whim, without worrying too much about what his future in Canada may hold.

Luiza, 25 (she/her)

Luiza is a creative person. She grew up in Brazil. As a child, she spent a long time with her grandparents in contact with nature and eating healthy foods. After her boyfriend got a job offer in Canada, she came with him, also looking for an opportunity to reinvent herself. Even though dealing with struggles in this new nation - the difficulty to adapt to a new culture, the loneliness - Luiza keeps an optimistic outlook, and bad mental health days are not enough to keep her from believing that something good is going to happen. She is also prepared to create opportunities herself by using her creativity.

Tori, 18 (she/her)

Tori, an intelligent yet curious realist, took to learning in an adapted environment after the coronavirus pandemic of 2020. Her first few years in college may have been confusing and unconventional, but all she asks for is a call to more accessible education. Like most of us, Tori wonders how newer generations are going to interact with technology and social media. Sometimes, she observes the world and it looks grim. Despite her level headedness, Tori has one thing that keeps her going: kids.

Creators

Bárbara Nani, 24 (she/her)

Born and raised in Brazil, the only thing Bárbara was always sure of is that she wants to work for people, and learning new cultures and languages. When arriving in Canada, she saw journalism as an opportunity to connect with people – which she believes is the most fascinating part of the job. Passionate about storytelling, she found out that words sometimes are not enough to share stories, and she wants to use media - photography, videography and video editing to help her with her passion. She learned that there is beauty and knowledge in simplicity. People have fascinating stories to share, they only need someone to listen, and she wants to be the person who listens and shares their stories. She wants to give a voice to stories that we should care about.

Eunice Adeoti, 20 (she/her)

If there’s anything journalism student Eunice loves more than words and storytelling, it’s people. Specifically, the people who make up the main focus of a compelling story. After living in three continents, it's safe to say she has witnessed narratives from many different walks of life. She believes that no matter where you are, you can find a story - one that is rich, intriguing and educational in some way. At the very least, it will leave you entertained, and at most, inspired. Eunice has loved writing ever since she was young enough to barely string together complete sentences. Fictional or not, she has always strived to nurture this burning desire to create and document. Aside from writing, she values expressing herself via a variety of creative mediums, namely visual arts and video. She hopes to leave you feeling even just a fracture of what she feels, every time she creates.
